Deaf and Hearing couples have a challenge ahead of them as the divorce rate for these couples is 90%. What's makes these couples unique? Communication and Cultural Differences. Here are a few simple tips which can make these relationships work:

  • Be sure your relationship is not entirely Deaf centered or Hearing centered. Keep it balanced allowing the Hearing individual to enjoy things Hearing people enjoy and the Deaf individual to enjoy things Deaf people enjoy.
  • Be sure the Hearing individual doesn't become the official "interpreter" but be sure the Deaf individual functions independently.
  • Remember Hearing and Deaf cultures communicate differently. A Deaf husband telling a Deaf wife "you have gained weight" may have little impact; to a Hearing wife, it could be disastrous. Work on communication.
  • Values are different between Deaf and Hearing cultures. Take the time to communicate what is important to your culture.
  • Make sure your home is as accessible as possible with lights, communication devices and even a Hearing dog allowing maximum independence for the Deaf.
  • Premarital counseling is a must! Find a great counselor and read books about male/female perspectives. Suggested publication: LOVE & RESPECT
