QUICK TIPS:
-
Make sure what you require of your other children you require of your Deaf child.
-
Avoid the phrase, "I'll tell you later." Deaf kids grow up greatly impacted by this simple put off from their parents. Take the time to explain what is happening or what is being said when it happens.
-
Take time to tell older Deaf kids what is happening in the world. Give them the information needed to be able to participate in conversations about politics, religion, music, etc. Take every opportunity to teach them your values and perspectives.
-
Take time to tell kids about their family history. Many Deaf kids grow up without knowing the simplest things about their family. Some of the stories are tragic. Take the time to sit with your children and introduce them to the family through pictures and videos.
-
Fill your house with assistive devices. Deaf kids should not depend on family to wake them, or an implant to help them hear an alarm, add flashing lights to your home, bed vibrating alarms to their bed, a video phone for phone conversations. Even consider a Hearing Dog. These little additives keep kids safe and add all around independence.
