QUICK TIPS:

  • Find out about laws which support your child's education. PL-94-142 is one of the most incredible laws enacted by congress. This requires schools to provide the "least restrictive environment" for your child, and you get to define what that environment is. You can require a Certified Interpreter, a note taker, even a captioner, and the school has a legal obligation to provide those services. The services just need to be defined in the student's IEP (Individualized Education Plan). IDEA and the ADA Law are additional laws that will serve you well as you define the education for your child.
  • Encourage your child to get involved in extra-curricular activities. Those activities make a huge difference in their lives. Have them play sports, join a play, take specialized lessons in Art, and never hold back because of their deafness.
  • Encourage your children to read. The majority of Deaf children historically have graduated high school with low reading levels. When children read more growing up, they will succeed.
