COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS IN REGARDS TO PERFORMANCE INTERPRETING

What type of make-up should I wear, or should I?

Stage make up can be a wonderful idea. It brings a depth to the face. Mary Kay foundation is thick much like stage make up and can be a wonderful alternative. At the risk of sounding like a commercial, this product is incredible, and no performance interpreter, male or female should be without it! Oil Mattifier If you want to avoid "glistening" under the lights of the theater, buy this!! Want tips on stage make-up application? Purchase this.

** Never apply make-up that will distract from your Signs (distracting colors, patterns, or prosthetics). Remember you are there to build a communication bridge not a communication wall. Some can be effective but wisdom here is key. **

Should I use a script or a lyric set when interpreting?

Probably 99% of interpreters cannot interpret with full facial expression and emotion when a set of words is nearby. Even the best of the best struggle with that skill. When the paper is accessible the result is a dependency on the written word rather than our ears. It is a natural tendency, but needs to be avoided if at all possible. The Deaf didn't pay to see you stare at a paper... your goal in essence is to look like the performer and he/she doesn't rely on anything but memory. Aim for equality, and we suggest no written assistance during a concert or a theatrical performance. There are exceptions to any rule, but this is a good hint to keep in mind.

Should I require compensation?

This will eternally be a hot topic. We have a standard at Gate, if the artist/performers get paid, we are paid. If they donate their services, we donate our services. That has been a mainstay and a very handy one that is understood by promoters and performers alike. The Code of Professional conduct does encourage it?
