COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS IN REGARDS TO PERFORMANCE INTERPRETING

I have been called to interpret a concert. What do I need to request from the production staff?

You need to always be sure the essentials are in place. Those are lighting, sound, and set list.

Lighting:

  • Option 1: A gelled down light (Roscolux #65: Daylight Blue)
  • Option 2: Lights in 45/45/90 angles which means one light coming  from the left shining on your face, one from the right, and one from the top. From the left, request the above Daylight Blue Gel. From the Right a Roscolux #02: Bastard Amber. From the top, a no color light. This set up rarely is agreed upon since it requires more lighting instruments, but it creates an incredible ease on the eyes of the Deaf. This causes your body to look rounded and more natural. Encourage the lighting people not to give you "white light" which is more harsh on the eyes.
  • NEVER if at all possible interpret using a music stand light! That creates extensive shadows, and becomes many days more of a distraction to the overall audience.

Sound:

  • There are 3 monitors you can choose from...
  • Hot Spot Monitor Examples
  • Wedge Examples (the easiest request to fill)
  • Ears Examples (the most commonly used monitor today)

Set Lists:

  • Always request set lists (list of songs), and always expect they will change prior to the show. Ask for the lyrics as well, but remember, they are incredibly busy people and often you will need to become friendly with the internet to get those.
