COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS IN REGARDS TO PERFORMANCE INTERPRETING

Are costumes appropriate for theater pieces? Should I wear classic black instead?

There are multiple schools of thought about costumes. Some say costumes are very appropriate, others believe only "classic stage black" is acceptable. Talk it over with the director in small theaters or the stage manager or theater staff in larger performances. The benefit of a costume is full integration with the characters and the play, but obtaining them, and using them can be a hassle. There can be gender conflicts or uncomfortable attire. If costumes are worn be sure they are opposing colors to your skin tone. Many interpreters feel this fact isn't important but your goal as an interpreter is not only to present the information but present in the most suitable manner. The color is critical, don't ignore it. Whatever you do, aim for cotton. With thousands of watts of light on your face potentially, "glistening" is a guarantee and you need a material that breathes.
